The reason I gave it 2 rather than 1 is because of the very few scenes where the movies slowed to let us breathe, I liked it when Rey took on the tie fighter (not a spoiler as it's in the trailer.
From the beginning of the film the pacing of this movie is far too fast, I always feel like an uninteresting action sequence with predictable stakes at the beginning of a film immediately implies the film is for slack-jawed wookies and in this case I don't think I was wrong.
Almost every scene was visually stunning but WGAF because this is almost 2020 and every film is that way. More so, most scenes in the film felt as though they were for nothing more than trailer-fuel and served no real purpose in the film than a tiny fan service buzz.
The score was incredibly forgettable except for small nostalgic moments which is a complete shame given John Williams track record - for one I was very impressed with his TFA score i.e. Rey's theme, Falcon chase, the song that plays at the end with Luke and the bit when Ben chibs Han.
Palpatine didn't feel like the same Sheev from ROTJ so it sucked me out of the movie and the whole ordeal deems the events of the original trilogy (i.e. Darth Vader chucking him down a hole before dying) meaningless which was just great.
The only redeeming story element in this film (at least in my opinion) is the Rey/Kylo dynamic, I am glad how they ended that and I feel as though it's the one thing they got right.
To put it simply, they screwed this whole trilogy up, they failed to capture the adventure of the original trilogy entirely with the exception of TFA (which at least felt like a SW film despite its faults) the characters felt one-dimensional because the story gives us no time to savour their faults, arcs and redeeming qualities as the OT did, instead our dialogue is plagued by cliché Disney 4 sentence conversations made up of wise-crack knee slappers for 12 year olds, and as a result they forcably throw in some scenes where characters are angry at each other over nothing of relevance (viewers can point to a scene on Endor with Poe and Finn.
It's really depressing to see how the cinema is being devoured by Marvel crap every second week, substandard Star Wars films, Transformers and childhood CGI protagonist of the week - people keep paying to see these films multiple times as though it's something to brag about when it's really just narrowing down the artistic flexibility with high budget films. Instead of seeing any of these films I would highly recommend instead watching Parasite, Midsommar, Green Book and Burning (a few films that I really enjoyed this year.
